WOMP WOMP WOMP
I’ve found that like most things in life, as I’ve matured my music taste has dramatically changed. As a kid I am sure I enjoyed whatever my parents might have been listening to. As I grew up, it was classic and alternative rock; Maybe even a little country here and there. As I progressed into college however, this all changed when I was introduced to electronic music.
Let me start off by saying that just saying electronic music does not truly explain the vast and broad range of genres that are under the title of “electronic music”. Electronic music is defined as “music that employs electronic musical instruments and electronic music technology in its production” according to Wikipedia. However, so many different styles and genre’s comprise this header. A few examples are listed below:
- House
- Trance
- Industrial
- Hardcore
Even within these sub genres many further sub genre’s exist. To get a true picture of what I mean, take a peak at the Wikipedia list of electronic music genre’s page. I would say that I at first was a huge fan of the more progressive/trance/electronica sounds of artist such as Tiesto.
However, as my taste evolved, I found myself enjoying more of drums and bass and rock electronica styles of artist such as Benny Benassi and Daft Punk respectively. From this I begin exploring a harder baseline sound with components of dubstep blended with electronic music such as deadmau5.
What has this all lead to? Dirty Dirty dubstep my friends. Dubstep is described as “"tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals" according to Wikipedia. I’ve became a huge fan of this hard hitting, high energy style of music.
A few examples of what once might call modern day dubstep:
Hard hitting bass – hard drops – hard synth lines – The stuff goodness is made out of. Dubstep is good stuff all in all… however, a new kid on the block is bringing Dubstep to the mainstream.
Meet Skrillex (aka Sonny Moore)…
Skrillex has taken the Dubstep (Electrostep?) world by storm with the release of his Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites EP.
Every song on his EP Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites has charted on Beatport in only three days. Moreover, the Dubstep track of the same title currently sits on Beatport’s Top 100 at #9, which is essentially unheard of for the genre. On a site that is basically run off all sub-genres of house, and the alike, I’ve gotta wonder; Have Dubstep fans finally woken up? Or has Dubstep just become more mainstream? – GenXGlow”
It does help he is working deadmau5 I am sure, but this guy has skills to his on regard and has managed to pull in multiple genres, styles, and even the sample of a few viral videos to practically create a new legacy for dubstep. No, he did not invent dubstep and yes he is borrowing many his tricks from previous successes, but all in all he is reinventing and popularizing a music genre that up until now had not know mainstream.
Even Britney spears is jumping on the dubstep wagon with her release of Hold it against me. Seeing that Skrillex is the current prince of dubstep it seems it would only be appropriate MTV ask his opinion of Britney’s direction. It could just be me, but it seems dubstep is about to push the recent music trending of incorporating electronic music into mainstream productions even further.
